    Testimonials

I have organised trips to Edinburgh for many groups of overseas university students over the last two years and those who stayed at Smart City were very satisfied. They seem to especially enjoy the buffet breakfast and appreciate the cleanliness and hostel’s central location. The staff are helpful and usually go out of their way to make the groups feel welcome. I appreciate the flexibility of booking process and I am sure we will be bringing more groups in future.

Mirek, Operations Coordinator and Trip Leader at Don’t be a tourist

Bar 50 was an amazing hangout for our 60+ students and kept busy by locals as well as guests! Extremely reasonably priced for the quality that was provided and not one complaint came out of our students mouths which, within itself should be testament enough! We can’t wait to visit again!

Justin Crane,  Social Experience Manager at Kaplan International English, stayed January 2014

Warwick School has made annual visits to Smart City Hostel Edinburgh for the last five years. The hostel is ideally situated allowing access by foot to all the wonderful tourist sites in Edinburgh along with easy access to public transport.

The staff are extremely helpful and with such a friendly and safe atmosphere in the hostel, dining area and bar our young students can roam freely whilst also feeling secure.

Great value for money and we always get packed lunches and have our meals in the hostel rather than paying ‘high street’ prices in the local restaurants.

    Mark Nasey, Warwick School

I have brought quite a few groups to stay in Edinburgh over the last two years, and I have to say that this hostel is the best in the UK. The staff are always extremely polite and helpful, the rooms are to a very high standard and bar 50 is a great place to eat, drink, party or relax. I wish every town I stayed in was a smart city!

Tour Leader for EF Language schools, 2012

Thank you to you and your staff for your hospitality. Both Banbury School and myself had a wonderful stay and were
thoroughly impressed by the hostel. We will most definitely be using the hostel again for groups that will be travelling to Edinburgh.

Account Manager – Concert & Educational Tours, 2012

A big thank you from the party leader of the group from Dumfries Academy. He said the trip was excellent and was full of praise for the staff at the hostel and the facilities/breakfast. He has stayed in Dundee and Stirling in previous years but now does not want to return there and wants a repeat tour staying at your hostel for next year.

My overall impression of this hostel, it’s a great one. It’s located right by the Royal Mile, close to the rain station, and it’s a clean place to stay. The fact that we had the room to ourselves made this place so much better. The staff were great too, they helped us find stuff to do in the area. The whole relogging into the wifi every two hours was a bit annoying, but it’s not bad for free. Really can’t find anything else to complain about this hostel.

I have just returned from Edinburgh for a pre-wedding bash with some friends. I have worded this as such as to make the point that we were not stag doers in the rowdy, make as much noise as possible category.

What we were looking for was budget accommodation in the centre of the city and this hostel delivered and then some. Location wise it couldn’t be any better as it is just off the Royal Mile, close to plenty of tourist traps and places to eat and drink.

The service was courteous and helpful and the room was great for what we wanted. The fact that it had 2 ensuite showers and toilets was great.
Breakfast in the morning was easily organised and very good value for money. There is no need to leave the hostel for this meal of the day.

The key thing to remember that this is a hostel and not a 5 star hotel. There are complaints from reviewers who seem to have missed this point. It won’t be the quietest and most luxurious of places to stay but if that doesn’t matter then look no further.

Great job guys, all hostels should pay attention to your setup.

When people hear the word ‘hostel’ they immediately think grot, gruel and gross! Smart City Hostel was quite the opposite. Situate in a perfect location, the hostel was easy to find, welcoming and of extremely good value. We stayed (4 of us) for a girly weekend in Edinburgh during December. The room had two bunks and an en suite bathroom all of which were spotless and very comfortable. We paid the extra money for breakfast which was well worth it, both continental and hot breakfast was a available with unlimited drinks to set us up for the busy days we had there. We also drank at the bar of an evening and the prices were fantastic, we recommend chambord (a black raspberry liqueur) and lemonade! If you are looking for somewhere lively to go of an evening visit Binkies Live Music Bar off the Royal Mile then head to Three Sisters Pub and Bar to carry on partying! I honestly have no negatives to report about my trip to Edinburgh or the Smart City Hostel. This is the first review I have ever written and I have chosen to do so purely because people should know about this fantastic hostel in Edinburgh! Take my word for it, you wont be let down x

This hostel is conveniently located to the Royal Mile. The castle is within easy walking distance.
Our room was a double ensuite. Clean enough. Smelled of bleach. Sheets, blankets, towels, soap and conditioner were included. Our room also had a hair dryer. I learned other rooms did not so do not expect one.
An English breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, beans, haggis, and of course cereal, juice and coffee.
Our room was above the bar so the noise level was a bit high but the wifi reception there was very good.
I found the staff to be helpful.
I was grateful for the lift as I have learned to not expect one.

Great central base to explore Edinburgh

We had no experience of a hostel before staying here but it is certainly somewhere we would return to, and also consider others in the future. There were four of us in our party and we stayed over a ‘fringe’ weekend. We booked a quad room which basically is 2 sets of bunk beds in one room, with a separate bathroom. The room was clean, beds reasonably comfortable, and bathroom very clean. The facilities in the hotel were great. A spacious bar and patio area, which also doubled up as the dining room for breakfast, were available and all the staff were very helpful. The whole hostel experience was great and even though we were quite a bit older than a lot of the guests we didn’t feel out of place at all and were made to feel welcome. The hotel is about 50yds down a street off the Royal Mile so for accessibility it really is great.

    Excellent value and good location

There was a large group of us so this location was ideal with single ensuite rooms. Location is good in the west end close to Haymarket Railway Station (10 minutes walk). Rooms are modern and clean. Although they are on the small side it was good having the communal room. Would recommend this for as a base if visiting Edinburgh.

I stayed here for a stag do and to visit the Edinburgh Fringe! The hostel is ideally located just off the Royal Mile and close to a load of bars, clubs and comedy venues!

The hostel itself has a nice bar, which had a pretty relaxed vibe and served some good food! Breakfast was £5 and a generous buffet, which set us up nicely for the day!
The rooms were comfortable, clean and had a separate shower and toilet, which was handy.
Would definitely recommend this hostel and would have no trouble staying here again (the only reason it’s not a 5 star is because we had to queue for half an hour in the rain before we could check in on the Friday as it was so busy)

If you’re looking to stay out late and have fun in Edinburgh, then this is a great place to stay. The location is close to everything, and their breakfast & bar is convenient. It’s loud though—so if you’re looking to turn in early or want peace & quiet, then this is not the place to stay as they are situated near many bars & clubs.

The staff is very friendly and helpful and answered any question or request I had very quickly. The rooms were clean and had everything I needed to keep going on our trip.

The price is low compared to hotels in Edinburgh, and a bit high compared to other hostels. Breakfast is a good deal (the potatoes are yummy), and they will print documents for you super-cheap, if needed.
